Bruised but not Broken
Cast Down, Yet Not Destroyed
Day 4
“Cast down, but not destroyed.” – 2 Corinthians 4:9b (KJV)
Life has a way of knocking us off our feet. Paul knew what it was like to be cast down—stoned and left for dead, betrayed by friends, beaten, and imprisoned. Yet he declared with unshakable faith: “Cast down, but not destroyed.”
Today, people all around us feel cast down. Wars and violence displace families, leaving them homeless and uncertain. Natural disasters wipe out communities overnight. Closer to home, someone may be cast down by job loss, a failed relationship, or a frightening diagnosis. Social media floods us daily with news of corruption, crime, and despair. It can feel like the whole world is collapsing under the weight of evil. And yet, Paul reminds us: being cast down does not equal destruction. Falls are temporary. Setbacks are not the end. With God, down is never final—He lifts us up again.
Application
Think of Peter, who denied Jesus three times. That failure cast him down in shame, but it didn’t destroy him. Christ restored him, making him a pillar of the early church. Or consider Micah’s declaration: “Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise” (Micah 7:8). God’s children may stumble, but they rise again.
Have you been cast down recently? Perhaps through grief, disappointment, or your own mistakes. The good news is that the same power that raised Jesus from the grave is at work in you. You may be bruised, but you are not broken. Even death itself cannot destroy those who belong to Christ—for the resurrection morning will prove victorious.
As the song reminds us: “Bruised and battered, weary and worn, oh but we shall be like Him on that resurrection morn.”
Ellen G. White Insight
“Though often in heaviness and trial, God’s children are not forsaken. Angels minister to them, and Christ’s presence sustains them.” – The Ministry of Healing, p. 249
