Pride Before the Fall: Learning from the Mistakes of the Proud

Monuments of Pride - Memorials of Folly

Key Text: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs
16:18 (NKJV)
History is filled with examples of individuals and nations brought to ruin because of
pride. From ancient empires to modern financial crashes, pride leads to overconfidence,
corruption, and ultimate collapse. The Bible makes it clear: those who exalt themselves
will be humbled.
A Memorial of Folly: The Tower of Babel
One of the earliest and most infamous memorials of folly is the Tower of Babel. After the
flood, humanity united to build a tower reaching the heavens, declaring, “Let us make a
name for ourselves” (Genesis 11:4, NKJV). Their prideful ambition ignored God’s
sovereignty, and as a result, He confused their language and scattered them across the
earth.
This unfinished tower stood as a symbol of human arrogance—a monument of pride
that was abandoned before it could ever reach its goal. Today, similar “towers”
exist—massive undertakings built on pride that fail spectacularly, leaving behind ruins
as reminders of human overreach.
Modern-Day Monuments of Folly: The Cost of Arrogance
History repeats itself. Nations that once boasted of their invincibility have crumbled.
Business empires that ignored wisdom have collapsed overnight. Even churches and
ministries that once flourished have fallen due to leadership consumed by pride. The
2008 financial crisis, caused by reckless overconfidence in the markets, serves as a
modern-day example of pride before the fall.
Pride leads people to ignore warnings, reject wise counsel, and overestimate their own
abilities. But as Scripture warns, destruction follows the proud.
God’s Call to Humility
The antidote to pride is humility. God does not take pleasure in bringing people
down—He longs for them to repent and turn to Him. Nebuchadnezzar, once blinded by
pride, only found restoration when he acknowledged God’s sovereignty (Daniel 4:34-
37).
Ellen G. White writes, “No outward observances can take the place of simple faith and
entire renunciation of self.” (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 158). True greatness is not
found in self-exaltation but in surrendering to God.
Application

Are there areas in your life where pride has taken root? Are you ignoring warnings
because of overconfidence?
Practical Steps:
1. Examine your ambitions – Are they driven by pride or by God’s will?
2. Seek wise counsel – Listen to correction and advice from godly sources.
3. Humble yourself before God – Choose humility now rather than waiting for a
painful fall.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
Keep me from the trap of pride. Help me to recognize when I am relying on my own
strength rather than trusting in You. Teach me humility so that I may walk in wisdom and
avoid the destruction that pride brings. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
