The Downfall of Pride: How It Undermines Relationships
Monuments of Pride - Memorials of Folly
“By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well-advised is wisdom.” – Proverbs 13:10
(NKJV)
Pride is a silent destroyer of relationships. It fuels conflict, breeds resentment, and erects walls
between family members, friends, and even within the church. When we prioritize being right
over being loving, pride takes root and drives a wedge between us and others. Scripture warns
that pride leads to strife, while humility fosters peace and restoration.
The Relational Consequences of Pride
Pride was at the heart of Lucifer’s rebellion. He exalted himself above God, leading to division in
heaven and his ultimate downfall (Isaiah 14:12-15). In human relationships, pride manifests as
stubbornness, an unwillingness to apologize, or the need to dominate others.
Consider the story of King Uzziah. Blessed by God, he became strong, but his pride led him to
overstep his boundaries by entering the temple to burn incense—something only priests were
permitted to do. When confronted, he refused to humble himself, and as a result, God struck him
with leprosy (2 Chronicles 26:16-21). His pride cost him his relationships, his leadership, and his
health.
Pride also destroyed the bond between Cain and Abel. Instead of humbling himself and learning
from Abel’s righteous sacrifice, Cain let pride and jealousy fester, ultimately leading him to
murder his brother (Genesis 4:3-8). Even today, many relationships suffer because pride prevents
reconciliation, fuels envy, and hardens hearts.
Healing Through Humility
Jesus taught that true greatness comes through humility. “Whoever desires to become great
among you, let him be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26, NKJV). A humble heart is willing to
listen, forgive, and place others before self. Pride may break relationships, but humility restores
them.
Ellen G. White wrote, “The strongest argument in favor of the gospel is a loving and lovable
Christian.” (Ministry of Healing, p. 470). When we let go of pride and embrace Christlike
humility, we reflect His love and foster unity.
Application
Are there relationships in your life suffering because of pride? Is there someone you need to
forgive or seek forgiveness from?
Practical Steps:
1. Examine your heart – Ask God to reveal areas where pride is damaging your
relationships.
2. Practice humility – Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and willing to admit when you are
wrong.
3. Seek reconciliation – Reach out to someone with whom you have tension, choosing peace
over pride.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, Help me to recognize and remove pride from my heart. Teach me to value
relationships over being right and to approach others with humility and love. May my actions
reflect Your grace, bringing healing where there is strife. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
